Photo Gallery: 2018, Loon Family of Halfmoon

Below are photos taken by community and friends.

Congratulations Halfmoon Lake on this second week of July as loon parents nested on our man-made island produced two chicks. This is the third consecutive year chicks hatched. The chick births were separated by a day apart, July 12 and 13.  The first born joined its parents for a swim on July 13 a day after hatching, and the second chick joined the family for a swim on July 15.

In 2016 Halfmoon had its first successful birth of loon chicks. Once again, the nest site is the same man-made island built four years earlier by a team of volunteers at the Loon Preservation Committee.

One week on and the chicks have grown, explored Rustic Shores Cove and ventured farther out into the broads, and survived a Bald Eagle looking for an easy meal.

Three weeks later the family traveled to the opposite end of the lake along Rt 28 where John Wheeler captured these images.  John also witnessed poor boating behavior threatening the loons.
