Halfmoon Lake had its first successful birth of loon chicks during the summer of 2016; doubly exciting in that the nest was built three years earlier by a team of volunteers at the Loon Preservation Committee location and positioned shortly after on Halfmoon. Three years later. and after several false starts, the nest site was productive. Two chicks were hatched but only one survived the first week.

After two years, finally a loon couple took residence on our man-made nest, and a belted kingfisher and turtle visited. Pictures courtesy of Ric Zaenglein at http://www.sportsimagez.com/:

The effort paid off when two chicks hatched on successive days. Unfortunately, one chick died within a week. The following pictures by Ric Zaenglein capture the first swim of the first born the day after hatching (Ric Zaenglein at http://www.sportsimagez.com/):

A second chick was born a day after the first, unfortunately, not surviving past a week. The surviving chick grew and explored the lake.
Ric Zaenglein (http://www.sportsimagez.com/) continued to chronicle the family's development during week two.
